The poems will appear in ‘Voices and Memory’ along with poems and illustrations from students of Years 9 to 13 at Stover School Newton Abbot.

The pamphlet will be launched on Saturday 4th October 2014 at Exeter Central Library as the culmination of our ‘The Forgotten of WW1’ day.

Women Poets of WW1

Some well known female writers based in Devon and Cornwall read and respond to poems written by women living and working during the Great War including Charlotte Mew and May Sinclair. With Ann Gray, Rachel McCarthy, Helen Evans and Chrissy Banks.

Devon remembers

On the Saturday of this year’s Exeter Poetry Festival we will be holding a series of events exploring the less heard voices of World War One including a presentation of work by female poets of the period, an independently produced film on Ivor Gurney, and poems by Devon school children. We are now inviting adult residents in Devon to become part of the day and the publication we are launching on it.

Terms and conditions for open submission to WW1 pamphlet project:

Poems must respond to the anniversary of the outbreak of WW1, through the theme of ‘Voices and Memory’. Selected poems will appear in a pamphlet of the same title, together with writing and art created in a schools workshop held in Exeter Library.

• Any style of poem is allowed but it must not exceed 25 lines including the title and spaces between stanzas.

• Poems must be typed, single-spaced, on A4 size paper

• Poems will be selected anonymously; your name, or any other mark of identification, must not appear anywhere on the poem.

• Provide a separate cover sheet with your name, postal address, phone number, email address, and title of your submission(s).

• You can enter up to 3 poems. There is no charge for entry.

• No alterations may be made once a poem has been submitted.

• The successful entrants will be contacted by post during the first week of September 2014.

• Selected poems will be published as part of a limited edition pamphlet launched on the 4th October 2014 at 3pm, Exeter Central Library, as part of Exeter Poetry Festival 2014. In submitting a poem(s) you guarantee that you will be available to read on the 4th October at the library and will have previously made yourself available for an audio recording of your poem, during September 2014.

• The copyright of the poem, both text and recording, remains with the author, but ExCite reserves the right to publish or broadcast the work in its entirety or in part in the UK during 2014-15 for PR purposes.

• The judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. Entries will be selected by members of the ExCite board.

Eligibility:

• Entrants must have a Devon postcode.

• Entrants do not need to be a member of ExCite Poetry in order to submit a poem, but agree to having their details stored by ExCite Poetry for future reference.

• Poems should be in English or English dialect, and the original work of the author.

• The poems may not have been previously published (this includes online) or broadcast.

Taking the Mic co-presenters Morwenna Griffiths and Tim King proudly host the fourth Exeter Poetry Slam!

12 of the finest poetic performers in the South West will go head to head in the 4th instalment of this annual competition. Previous winners include Ian Royce Chamberlain, Robert Garnham and Daniel Haynes, so expect the very highest standard of competition.

The Slam will be held over three rounds, comprising three heats, a semi-final and final. The winner of each heat and the two highest scoring runners-up will qualify for the semi-final. The two highest scoring poets in the semi-final will compete head-to-head in the final.

Slam! poets will also be asked to supply a biographical note of no more than 40 words (strict maximum)  by Monday 30th September 2013, to be read by the referees to introduce each contestant to the audience.

A Night at the Museum Part 1: Exeter Poetry Festival October 5th 2013 – Launch of ExLibris Press and the ‘Making History’ pamphlet

ExLibris is the publishing arm of ExCite Poetry, this is its launch event.

We plan to publish a series of pamphlets in both hand-sewn, beautifully produced and designed limited editions and as iBooks with voice recordings of each poem and other added features.

‘Making History’ is our first publication, in partnership with Royal Albert Memorial Museum

It features poems from Lawrence Sail and Harry Guest.

It poems from Devon poets Mark Totterdell, Becky Gethin, Graham Burchell, Sally Flint, Denise McSheehy, Ian Chamberlain, and Simon Williams the winning entrants in an open competition judged by Damian Furniss and Julie-Ann Rowell.

It contains ten poems and ten illustrations from pupils at Redhills Community Primary School who worked with poets in education Phil Bowen and Liz Adams at Royal Albert Memorial Museum

ExCite Poetry, the UK Poetry Society stanza for Devon, cordially invite you to attend the launch of ExLibris, the first UK poetry press to produce high quality electronic poetry pamphlets using Apple technology, with full voice recording of poems by their authors, as well as limited editions in hand-stitched hardcopy.

The launch will debut the first pamphlet; an anthology response to the collection of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, by local school children and established and emerging poets basedin Devon. The museum will be closed to the public, however exhibition spaces will remain open for your perusal.

Prosecco and soft drinks available.

Ann Gray judging Fire River Poets Open Poetry Competition 2013

Ann Gray, who is reading at the Exeter Phoenix on September 5th with Carol Ann Duffy, is judging the 2013 Fire River Poets Open Poetry Competition.

CLOSING DATE: 8 November 2013

JUDGE:   Ann Gray has an MA in Creative writing from the University of Plymouth. Her collections include At The Gate (2008) & The Man I Was Promised (2004), both Headland. Her poems have featured in the Forward Prize Anthology in 1995 and 2008. She was commended for the National Poetry Competition, 2010, second in the Hippocrates Poetry and Medicine Prize 2013 and earlier this year was the Poet in Residence at the Cambridge University Botanic Garden as part of the Thresholds Cambridge University Museums Project.

ENTRANCE FEE: £3 for one poem, £5 for 2 poems,  £10 for 4 poems.

ExCite Poetry, the Poetry Society Stanza for Exeter and Devon, will launch a poetry publishing arm on the 5th October, during the Exeter Poetry Festival 2013 (3rd – 6th October 2013).

ExCite Poetry will publish single-author poetry pamphlets and anthologies with a focus on supporting emerging and established poets in Devon. Pamphlets will be in both print form and, uniquely, electronic form with voice recording, for sale via Apple iBooks.

The inaugural pamphlet will be an anthology response to items in the collection of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter. Contributions will be from local school children, renowned poets in Devon and via open submission to find the best emerging talent.
